Are Wild Idea Buffalo Humanely Treated?

YES

and Wild Idea Buffalo Company is American Humane Certified. You would think humane treatment of animals would go without saying. As it turns out many people seem to have a say and a view on what humane treatment is. The debate is largely between factory farms and animal activists. The factory farms position is underlined by mass production at any cost and the activist position is about eliminating animals completely from our food supply. It is my belief that many family farmers naturally practice humane treatment and good animal husbandry. Our own humane treatment to all of our animals is common sense based; we provide them with a healthy environment, ensure that they have access to food and water, treat them with respect, and this might sound corny, but – we love them. When we harvest our buffalo they are in the pasture grazing, this eliminates the stresses of corralling, of trucking and of them waiting at the back door of a slaughter house. Our animals live a good life and are given dignity in death. Again, this is not a silver bullet, but it’s a good start. There is a lot more detailed information on the humane treatment and slaughter of animals; here are a couple of sites if you would like to read and learn more on the current policies.

    Hi Jill,
We were delighted to read that you are thinking about American Humane Certified. We enjoyed meeting you at Cooking for Solutions last year and hope we can continue that conversation about our program. Please visit our web site, http://www.thehumanetouch.org. You will find more information about the certification process. The buffalo standards are not posted on the web site, but let me know if you want to review them and we will send them to you. Looking forward to hearing from you. I thoroughly enjoyed Dan’s book, Buffalo for the Broken Heart. Sounds like all is going well. Warmest Regards, Kathi Brock, Director of Strategic Partnerships, American Humane Certified
