As a falconer, wildlife biologist, and rancher I have always been passionate about wildness & nature. Preserving land for wild things has been a main focus of my life and bringing buffalo back to their native land has been the center piece of those preservation efforts. I would never have imagined that I would be a meat purveyor but, in 1997, in an effort to keep the ranch alive, I started a small meat company called Wild Idea Buffalo Co. The idea was simple: supply delicious, healthy, grass-fed, humanely harvested red meat to consumers interested in sustainability. That turned out to be a sort of a beginning. The business continues to grow and we have recently started a non-profit organization with our Native American friends called “Sustainable Harvest Alliance”. With our new movable harvest facility, buffalo ranchers on and off the reservation can harvest their free-roaming buffalo humanely in the field, under inspection. And in an effort to keep buffalo hides from being hauled to dump sites as a waste product, we are now shearing the capes to be spun into fine yarn and utilizing the hides by turning them into fine buffalo-leather articles. It has all been driven by Americans like you – demanding environmental, nutritional, and cultural accountability. I thank you.
